Barbecue: Pierces Pitt Bar-B-Q - This is the real deal. Excellent pulled pork has been served at this establishment for more than thirty years. J.C.'s Special is a great deal! Website: http://www.pierces.com/. Barbecue (close second): Hog Wild - This spot is really in Toano, not Williamsburg, but the drive out Rt. 60 towards Richmond is worth it for the ribs, brisket and pulled pork. You MUST try the "Hog Wild" platter at least once! You won't regret it. Burger: Second Street - Chris was right! This place has huge, mouthwatering burgers cooked any way you'd like. Try the Fourth Street Burger - with Swiss, grilled onions and grilled mushrooms. This place also has good coconut shrimp. Website: http://www.secondst.com/. Burger Deal: Shacklefords II - The burgers here are great, served with crisp fries and a pickle. Various cheeses, bacon, grilled onions and grilled mushrooms are available as toppings. Come on Tuesday and the burger is half price - you won't get a better burger for less than $5. The dinner salads here are also standouts, especially if you opt for the fried oysters on top. The gingerbread cake is also quite good. Website: http://www.shacklefords.com/. Chocolate Soufflé: Center Street Grill (review) - This dessert is to die for - with a homemade pot of whipped cream served on the side. At $6 it is also a great deal. Coffee Shop: Aromas - In the colonial area but away from the main drag, this coffee shop has a local flavor and is popular with students, tourists and residents alike. Try the mocha smoothie, the curried chicken salad, or the portabella wrap. If it's after 5 PM fondue, shrimp and grits and other specialties are available in addition to the sandwiches. Breakfast is also served and there is always a sumptuous dessert selection. French: Le Yaca - Indulge yourself in a meal here. The bread is spectacular, the service is outstanding and the food is always top-notch. The French onion soup is delectable and the seafood dishes are always a good bet. French Bistro: Blue Talon Bistro - A welcome addition to the colonial area in 2004, this place has a swanky bar and plenty of comfortable seating including a small patio out back. Try the steamed mussels, the duct confit salad, the braised beef, or the herb-roasted chicken. Also a great place for Sunday brunch - make sure and get the bread basket to go with it! Website: http://www.bluetalonbistro.com/indexBTB.html. Frozen Treat: Sno-To-Go - Shaved ice and the famous "stuffed" sno-cones make this seasonal takeout place original and delicious. A stuffed sno-cone is shaved ice, then soft serve ice cream, then more shaved ice. Sounds kind of strange, but you have to try it! Ice Cream: Bruster's - Delicious ice cream at decent prices and specials including a free scoop when it is raining make this my favorite ice cream place in Williamsburg. Website: http://www.brustersicecream.com. Indian: Nawab - Don't let the strip mall location discourage you from trying this place. The lunch buffet is one of the best deals in Williamsburg and the dinner menu shines with traditional Indian dishes like chicken tikka masala and saag gosht. My personal favorite is the lamb tikka masala and the naan is a must-try. The service can be a bit slow so don't go here for dinner if you are in a hurry. Website: http://www.nawabonline.com/. Italian: Doraldo - This family owned establishment has excellent pastas and pizzas. Try anything with the vodka cream sauce and don't miss the signature garlic knots that are brought to your table upon arrival. Italian (close second): Sal's By Victor - A popular spot for tourists, this place can get very busy but once you are seated the service is usually pretty quick. Try the pizza, the calamari marinara or the smoked chicken ravioli. Many are also big fans of the meat lover's calzone. Website: http://www.salsbyvictor.com/. Mexican: South of the Border - Salvadoran specialties are available along with Mexican standards at this Second Street eatery. Try the pupusas, the enchiladas al mojo, or the fajitas. The tortilla soup is fabulous and there is a great selection of margaritas. Website: http://www.sotb-williamsburg.com/. Pie: Jamestown Pie Company - This takeout spot has excellent gourmet pies of both the dessert and pizza varieties. My personal favorite is the chocolate pecan! Scrumptious. Website: http://buyapie.com/. Pizza: Florimontes - The thin-crust style pizza here is great with a sweet tomato sauce and plenty of gooey cheese. There's even a lunch special for two slices and a drink for $4.50. Also try the wide variety of salads and other goodies sold in bulk behind the counter. If you're on the run try some of the pre-packed or frozen items available along with other Italian grocery items around the store. Sandwich: The Cheese Shop - Although this place can get crazy at times when the tourist season is in full swing, the sandwiches are excellent. Try the roast beef and cheddar on wheat or the turkey and provolone with sprouts and house dressing on a baguette. Cheeses, bread and salads are also available and there are great food souvenir items. The chocolate chunk cookies are awesome! Sandwich (tie): Carmines - Nestled away from the tourist area, this Italian catering and gourmet food shop also makes wonderful sandwiches for takeout. Sushi: Soya of Williamsburg - With hibachi grills and a sushi bar, this restaurant will please sushi lovers as well as those who are in the mood for something cooked. Try the Kabuki I Roll, the spicy tuna roll and the hibachi shrimp dinner. |
